News from 2019 European Society of Cardiology Congress, 31 August – 4 September, 2019
More than 32,000 delegates from over 150 countries are attending this year’s Congress held in Paris, France. The critical importance of this meeting is underlined by recent news that cardiovascular disease mortality is now increasing in Europe, for the first time in 50 years. Global cardiovascular health is therefore an urgent priority.
Leading the news from the Congress was the release of five new guidelines from the Society, including guidelines for the management of dyslipidaemia and diabetes. LDL cholesterol is the indisputable primary lipid target; the Joint European Society of Cardiology/European Atherosclerosis Society Task Force have taken account of the clinical trials evidence and lowered LDL cholesterol goals in high and very high-risk patients.
